Kefalonia
The largest of the Seven Islands in the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia is a charming and very popular tourist place. Villages with old mansions and humble farms, green rocks coming out of deep blue waters and Roman, Venetian, Byzantine ruins complete the picture of the "island of contrasts".
Things to see
Kefalonia is one of the most popular destinations of the Ionian Islands and the biggest island of the group. The Greek Island of Kefalonia has many wonderful beaches with fine sand and turquoise, bleach-like waters, specific to the island. Others of its many beauties are its picturesque villages, its National Park on its highest mountain (Mount Ainos) on which a rare specie of fir forest grows and terrific landscapes.
Kefalonia has beautiful beaches, some of them rewarded by the Blue Flag for their cleanliness. In Kefalonia you can find one of the most famous beaches in Greece, Myrto. It is a beautiful golden sandy beach surrounded by vertical rock cliffs. The waters look as if the blue colour of the sea was mixed with bleaching water it is really impressive.
You can also visit the various museum of the island like the natural history museum which established by the society for the protection of the Environment of the islands of Kefalonia, the Corgialenion Historical and Folk Art Museum which has been founded in order to preserve the memory of the political, economical, social and historical conditions of Kefalonia before the earthquake of 1953.
When to come
Apart from the religious festivals which celebrated during the summer there are also cultural festivals which are the international music festival in Argostoli on the end of August, the theatrical festival which is organised on July the 15th in the town of Argostoli and the music festival of Lixouri during the month of September. Also on the 18th of August there is a wine festival and during the July and August there are "Eortia" cultural events in Sami such as concerts, traditional dances, theatrical performances
