Lefkada
Lefkada is the fourth-largest island in the Ionians. Island’s beauty is also in its proud people. In the villages, look out for the older women in traditional dress.Lefkada’s mountainous peaks exceed 1000m, and the island’s fertile fields include olive groves, vineyards, and fir and pine forests. There are 10 satellite islets off the heavily developed east coast, and the less populated west coast boasts spectacular beaches.
Things to see
Situated on the north east side of the island, Lefkada town is both picturesque and tranquil. Built around a natural harbour it has distinctive multicoloured houses and several friendly tavernas and cafes. It is a pleasant place to idle away a few hours and the all pervading convivial atmosphere leaves you feeling both relaxed and fulfilled. The nightlife here is also fairly good with bars staying open well into the night.
Using the town of Lefkada as a base for exploring the island, visitors can head southwards passing by the popular tourist resort of Nydri, and then onto the traditional village of Karya, which is one of the main villages on Lefkada.
About 12km from Lefkada town is the pretty village of Agios Nikitas that stands beneath the shade of towering cypress trees that grow side by side. The newer buildings have been constructed to traditional design so they match the old almost perfectly. There are tavernas and cafes and a friendly lively ambience making it a very agreeable place for a soothing yet fun filled holiday.
Continuing along, visitors will reach two of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, those of "Kathisma" ( Agios Nikitas ) and Porto Katsiki, both of which are a marvel of natural beauty that leaves visitors in awe. During the summer months, these beaches are filled with people enjoying the beautiful waters and beaches.
