Thasos

Thasos

Thassos is one of the most picturesque of the Greek Islands, covered in wooded mountain scenery with luxuriant vegetation and rimmed by wonderful beaches. Golden Beach on the east coast is fast becoming the islands most popular resort and is considered the best beach, although the best area of continuous beaches is found in the far south around Limenaria, Potos and Pefkari. The east coast, where the mountains meet the sea, may well have the most spectacular scenery but the west coast is far more intriguing with its olive groves, sandy beaches and quaint fishing villages. The interior is also well worth a visit; the lush verdant landscape peppered with traditional Thassian mountain village. The capital of the island, the harbour town of Limenas, encapsulates both old and modern Thassos. Filled with tavernas, restaurants and shops it also boasts a fine beach.

Things to see

One of the most tourism developed islands, Thasos gathers crowds of holidayers, especially for the North Greece, since it is so close, and it is also a place for a quick weekend getaway. Here a visit can choose either a lively or a quiet and relaxing holiday, since the island can satisfy both styles. Thasos is a verdurous island that has many quaint little villages and sandy beaches with crystal clear waters. The road system of the island is very well planned and circles the island coastwise. By car you can reach most of the natural sites of the island as well as Mount Ipsariou. Some things to see are the port of Thasos, the ruins of the Venitian castle at the Limenaria and the mansions of Theologo.

The island of Thasos has a long and varied history, and the excellent little archaeological museum in the capital, Thasos (Limenas), tells some of the story. A few Greco-Roman remains in the town, a submerged ancient marble quarry, Byzantine monasteries and Neolithic tombs comprise the island’s historical attractions. The island is only really crowded in July and August, and even then there are numerous empty beaches and hidden coves tucked away on its pine-ringed shores, connected by frequent buses plying the circular coastal road. Further inland, Thasos’ traditional mountain villages, shaded by huge oaks and plane trees, feature old stone-and-slate architecture, crystal-clear mountain waterfalls, and great hiking and mountain biking opportunities.

Thassos's unspoilt sandy beaches offer hours of safe bathing for children. The resort with the best facilities for kids is Makryammos, where visitors will find a kids' club, mini zoo, children's pool and playground. Pine Tree Paddock in Rachoni, and the Pegasus Riding Centre in Theologos, on the slopes of Mount Ipsario, both offer riding lessons and group trekking at all levels.

When to come

Thassos is also one of the greenest islands with a near perfect climate of hot summer sun and cool winters with a little wind and rain mixed in.Thassos has many cultural events that will start to take place in the beginning of the summer and continue through July and August.
