About Santorini Greece
The Greek Island of Santorini is one of the most popular vacation resorts in the world, mainly due to its irresistible mysterious beauty. Countless visitors come to Santorini Island every year to explore the scenic villages, visit the wonderful ancient sites, swim in the deep blue Aegean Sea, relax on the stunning beaches, dance till dawn in the hopping night clubs, and, more than anything else, admire the Caldera and the breathtaking view of the sunset.
The whole island is a volcano, which technically is still active today and its actual shape is the result of volcanic eruptions in various periods. The most important of them seems to have taken place in 1500 B.C., when, all the western part of the island disappeared under the water which covered all the space left after the violent eruption, forming the walls of the "caldera", the remains of the old crater of the volcano, a steep rock of volcanic material, 150 to 300 m. high.
Things to see
Santorini is a beach lover’s ideal holiday spot. Many of the Santorini beaches are known for their colorful sands and dramatic scenic views, such as the black beaches of Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos and Monolithos, as well as the magnificent Red Beach and White Beach near Akrotiri, which are embraced by reddish and whitish cliffs, respectively. Other beaches worth visiting are Ammoudi, Armeni and Baxedes near Oia and Vourvoulos in northeastern Santorini, which are easy to find on your Santorini map.
We suggest you visit the Castle, the windmills and the Maritime Museum. Other interesting sites on the island include the Archaeological museum, the Folklore museum and the Prehistoric Museum, the two cathedrals and the Venetian Castle Gizi in Fira Town as well as many churches, monasteries and vineyards scattered around the island. Santorini also has some of the finest archaeological sites in the Cyclades, such as the ruins of the Minoan City in Akrotiri, the ancient ruins of the City of Thira and the relics of the ancient cemetery in Phinikia.
When to come
Santorini hosts an international music festival each year in August. Also noteworthy are the festivities which occur on August 15 to celebrate Panagia (The Virgin Mary). Santorini is one of the most romantic places in the world. The sunset from Oia or Imerovigli is a spectacle not to miss. The sun sets directly to the sea bathing the whole landscape in colours ranging from blue and purple to red and yellow. The caldera looks like burning, evoking the real eruptions of the past.
