Zakynthos

Zante, also often known as Zakynthos, is the most southerly of the Ionian Islands and one of the most popular Greek islands. Triangular in shape the island has three distinct geographical areas: the north west is mountainous with quaint traditional mountain villages, the central region is a fertile plain rich with olive groves and vineyards and the south east is characterised by beautiful beaches. The locals welcome tourists with open arms and offer them the hospitality which Greece is famous for.

In Zakynthos there is something for everyone on this floating island of paradise with numerous sandy beaches, mountain villages preserving the traditional Greek way of life, beautiful natural scenery, watersports and good quality restaurants, bars and nightclubs to more than cater for all your entertainment needs.

The greater square of Zakynthos town, the Solomou square, is surrounded by very important buildings like the Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos, the church of Saint Agios Nikolaos on the Mole and the cultural centre of Zakynthos.

Solomou square which is dominated by the statue of the Greek national poet Dionysios Solomos who wrote the “Hymn of Freedom” that become the Greek National Hymn, throngs with people on summer evenings, when locals and visitors come here to take a stroll.

The church of Saint Nikolaos was built in 1561 and is the oldest building on the square. It is the only Venetian building that survived. It is a church of historical value and great importance because the patron saint of the island Saint Dionysios served here.

The superb beaches of Zakynthos are famous in Greece for their unspoiled beauty and their mirror – like emerald waters. The most famous beach of the island is the wonderful Navagio Beach which was fine white volcanic sand, turquoise waters and the remains of a ship which are emerging from its perfect sand. There is also the leganas beach famous fro the endangered species of sea turtle Caretta – Caretta and therefore consists a part of the National Marine Park. Watersports, endless sandy beaches, natural beaches within rocky formations, everything is available in Zakynthos island.

The nightlife of Zakynthos is exciting and has much to offer. Numerous bars and night clubs can be found in the island proposing various kind of music and attracting many people looking for drinks and dances all night long. Zakynthos nightlife is concentrated in the famous beach resorts of Argasi, Laganas, Alykes and Tsilivi.

When to come

Zakynthos is worth visiting by anyone during all the seasons of the year especially in Spring and Summer when many feasts take place. A wine festival is organised in the capital of Zakynthos, from the last days of August to the first days of September during which the excellent wines produced by the island can be tasted. The feast of Agia Mavra is held on the 3rd of May, after the religious ceremony the feast continues with banquets and traditional dances. Other Feasts are the Feast of the Virgin Mary on the 15th of August and the two annual major festivals are held in honour of Agios Dionysios on 24th of August and on 17th of December.
